Bought with a Price

You are not your own … for you have been bought with a price.

~ I Corinthians 6:19-20

Personally, I like this verse. But I can understand how someone might find it, well, annoying. Paul is telling us Christians, You’ve got it all wrong – your approach to life. You’re acting like you belong to you, like you’re in charge, and that simply isn’t true. You are not your own because Christ purchased you and the price He paid was high. He paid with His life.

Growing up in America we are taught to believe the opposite – that we’re free. Fiercely independent and proud of it. How dare anyone suggest that we are not our own. So, I get it that that verse rubs some the wrong way. But anyone with a longing to find and embrace her God-given purpose needs to first embrace the clarity that this passage brings. Clarity about what to do next. About what is priority.

The rest of the verse states…

Therefore, glorify God in your body.

In all you do. In all you are. In all you think and feel and believe Glorify God. Why? Because He says so and He is in charge, not you. And rightfully so because the price was – pricey.

Such a simple concept, stated in few words. Not difficult to understand. We need to face the fact that life is not about me, myself and I. Of course, we can choose to pretend these verses are a load of bunk and dismiss them. We can cry as we did as kids, You’re not the boss o’ me! But in the face of the Purchaser-o’-me, that just does not fly.

Accepting that You, Lord, are indeed Boss of me, how do You want me as a uniquely distinct individual to glorify You? I’m listening—for I have been bought with a price.
